Walmart donates $5,000 in coats for kids in need

With a few dollars in last minute donations to spend for Coats for Kids, we called our friends at Walmart to see which store had the most coats available in stock. With $1,000 to spend, we knew we’d find good coats for great prices. Well, we can always count on Walmart to go above and beyond with their support for The Salvation Army. After hosting our shoppers and helping us with our purchases, Walmart donated $5,000 in coats to Indy’s kids in need! We just can’t thank Walmart enough for helping us help families who are struggling.

This year’s Bob Gregory’s Coats For Kids was easily the largest distribution day to date with the line to enter at the Northwest Pavilion stretching for blocks around the Indiana State Fairgrounds. This annual partnership with Tuchman Cleaners and WTHR-13 distributed coats to more than 5,000 area children on Saturday. (Check out the video on the right) Read more

Our Volunteers Run on Dunkin’

Thanks to Dunkin’ Donuts for providing breakfast for our volunteers on Coats for Kids Distribution Day yesterday. Our volunteers work hard throughout the weeks and days leading up to this event, collecting, carrying, sorting and displaying thousands of coats, hats and gloves for Indy’s kids in need. And it means a lot to them to see area businesses stepping up to support their efforts.

Carlos and his teams provided about 9 dozen donuts from their downtown Indy location and about 300 munchkin donuts from the Greenfield Dunkin’. Because of their support, we can provide breakfast for the men, women and children who give so generously of their time to help others. And this donation allows us to support those in need with the dollars our community gives. We appreciate the many ways Dunkin’ supports this community.

If you appreciate Dunkin’s partnership as much as we do, let them know it. Next time you’re in the mood for a cup of joe and a donut, don’t forget to let them know they’ve earned your business by making the people of Indy their business.

The official cleaner of Coats for Kids

Over the past 23 years, Tuchman Cleaners has cleaned over 170,000 coats that have been generously donated for Bob Gregory’s Coats for Kids program! That’s a remarkable number. But even more amazing is the fact that each of those coats represents a child in need who did not go without a coat that winter. Those coats represent thousands of parents who were struggling to provide basic necessities for their children, and Hoosiers stepped up to the challenge to take care of their neighbors.

We want to thank Mike Washington and the team at Tuchman Cleaners for being a vital part of this program that touches so many families. Thanks for your partnership, for all the time and energy your devote to helping collect and clean those coats. We truly couldn’t do this without you! Read more

Fans donate coats, cash to kids in need

Colts fans stepped up in a big way by donating over 2,100 coats and $7,100 to Coats for Kids on their way into Lucas Oil Stadium for the Colts vs. Seahawks game this past weekend.

Thanks to all of the staff and volunteers from WTHR-13, Tuchman Cleaners, and our own Salvation Army team for their dedication to keeping kids warm this winter! Continued thanks to the fine folks at Two Men And A Truck who gathered and delivered all the coats to Tuchman for cleaning.

The 23rd annual Coats for Kids distribution will be this Saturday, October 10 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Last year, more than 4,200 kids received coats through Coats For Kids, an increase of 15% over the previous year. And, this year the need is expect to be even greater due to the poor economy and a rise in unemployment.

There’s still time to help. You can give a kid a new coat by making an online donation. Or, you can take your new or gently used coats to any area Tuchman Cleaners through the rest of today.

Thanks to the hundreds of you who made it down to Apple Fest yesterday. The numbers are in and Apple Fest brought in over $9,200 this year! It takes every last person who came out to volunteer or put your lunch dollars to work, so thanks for caring about our mission…and then doing something about it.

We want to be sure to thank our event sponsors. Without the generosity of partners like ours, we wouldn’t have the ability to host an event for you to be a part of. So, thanks to our campaign sponsor – Two Men and a Truck, lunch sponsor – Applebee’s, apple cobbler sponsor – GFS Marketplace, apple sponsor – Adrian Orchards, media partners – WIBC 93/ESPN The Fan 1070/B105.7/HANK 97.1, campaign spokesperson, Mel McMahon, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The American Legion, Dunkin’ Donuts, Comedysportz, Squish Designs, Indy Moms Like Me, the Indiana Pacers and their Fan Van, the Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders, and folks from each of our Salvation Army’s nearby locations. And thanks to Bandwagon for setting the mood with some great tunes that certainly called people from blocks away!

So, thanks for supporting Homelessness Bites and for donating coats to Bob Gregory’s Coats for Kids. Stay tuned to find out how much we raised for programs at our women’s and children’s shelter.
