Students Care, Gilchrist Shares
May 11, 2009 by kristen

Ms. Steffen’s fourth grade class sent out a Call to Care and Gilchrist & Soames answered.
These White Lick Elementary students have spent weeks learning about the 1,300 kids (and their moms) who are homeless right here in Indy. When Ms. Steffen told her class that the average age of a homeless person in our city is 9 years old, that really hit home for her kids – many of which are about 10 years old themselves. So, they started a group called “A Call to Care”.
These compassionate kids have spent their time collecting old cell phones for donations, making handmade fleece blankets and now welcome kits for the women and kids who come to The Salvation Army’s Social Service Center here in downtown Indianapolis. They’d spent weeks contacting local businesses, friends and family requesting donations for their kits, but came up a little short. And that’s when we called on Gilchrist & Soames.
Shawn and Brian donated enough shampoo, conditioner, shaving kits, soaps and lotions for about 200 welcome kits that will be given to homeless women and kids when they check into the shelter. And each student included handmade welcome cards in their kits to remind the recipient that someone cares about them.
So, a big thanks to Ms. Steffen’s class and to Gilchrist & Soames for “doing the most good”!
We all have something to give to those who have less. Whether it’s time, talent, items or a check, we can all give something that lightens the load for a neighbor who is burdened. If you’d like to make a difference right here in your community, give Kristen a call at 224-1019, or go here to donate now.
