Probably the first question you ask yourself when presented with a request from a charity like The Salvation Army, right? So, if you’re wondering why you should sponsor an hour or donate a prize package for our WIBC Radiothon this December 3-5, you should let Donna* tell you in her own words.
My name is Donna. My life has been saved! This is a literal statement because the abuse from my husband had progressed to the point where he was going to kill me. And even worse than that he would have done so in front of my three children. He had never abused the children before, but the signs were all present and I knew it was just a matter of time before he started on them too.

Shelly’s story

Shelly’s* boyfriend was an abuser - he even served time in jail for attacking her. After he was released, he convinced her it would be different. It didn’t take long for him to break that promise. While her two small children were away visiting her ex-husband over Christmas break, Shelly came looking for shelter at The Salvation Army.
Shelly’s story is all to familiar to the case managers at the shelter . According to the FBI, one in every four women will be abused by her boyfriend or husband in her lifetime. And of the over 1,700 women and children served by our shelter in 2008, over 80% of them were fleeing abuse!
But Shelly was ready to break the cycle of abuse in her life. When space came available at our domestic violence shelter, she moved in. Read more
