Not familiar with Apple Fest? Well, here’s the cause – This year 1,500 kids will eat their meals and spend their nights on the streets of Indy. Come out to Monument Circle on October 1 from 10:30am – 1:30pm and Eat in the Street for homeless kids at Apple Fest.

The details for this year’s 6th annual event are coming together. We’re pleased to announce our media partner for this year’s event – Emmis Communications. Now I don’t mention one specific station, because all four of Emmis’ stations will be promoting Apple Fest together. We’re thrilled to be working with the folks from WIBC 93.1fm, ESPN 1070 The Fan, 91.7 HANK fm and B105.7fm! Listen for promotions to start mid-September on-air and via the web. Read more

Do you hear what I hear?

I have a constant ringing in my ears these days, and I couldn’t imagine a better sound. The ring of a Salvation Army bell is more than a sound of the season. It’s the sound of a group of little boys learning that Scouts use their time to support those in need. It’s the sound of a community coming together to pool their resources and give to make a difference. It’s the sound of hope for a single mom struggling to provide Christmas gifts for her family.

You see, whether its outside your local Walmart or online, when you ring a bell for The Salvation Army, you’re not just reading about how families are hurting in this economy, you’re doing something about it – and it’s not too late to join us. Read more

Volunteers Needed

skyconcertSo it’s time to fill you in on some details about our partnership with partnering with Hank FM and Advantage Health for Skyconcert at the end of this month. And when I say “our” I mean, we need you!

Our challenge is to coordinate about 200 volunteers by Skyconcert on August 30th. Our volunteers will have one of three duties – walk through the crowds with a bucket collecting donations, ring a bell at one of the stationary kettle locations or take pledges at our phone bank at the Emmis Studios on Monument Circle. All of the donations collected will benefit our programs to end homelessness in Indianapolis.

Volunteers will be asked to attend one of three open house training sessions on either August 16th, 21st or 25th. You’ll recieve an orientation, your volunteer ID badge, and your free event t-shirt. This is also when you can complete your background check – since you’ll be handling money.

Interested in signing up? Give our volunteer coordinator, Elizabeth, a call at 224-1010.

Labor of Love

When your family packs up the minivan for Skyconcert this Labor Day weekend – lawn chairs, cooler, sunscreen for the wait ’til fireworks – don’t forget to include a couple of extra dollars to help out a neighbor in need. Advantage Health and 97.1 Hank FM have invited The Salvation Army to partner with them at this year’s Skyconcert on August 30th. Yep, we’re the official charity of one of Indy’s biggest gatherings of the summer!

Although we’re still unpacking from Saturday’s Rally, we’re looking forward to our next opportunity to get out there in the community and share the good work of the men and women who serve others through a labor of love. (Our theme. Catchy, huh?) We’re planning on covering the area with volunteers who will be collecting donations to benefit our Homlessness Bites campaign to end homelessness in Indianapolis. Your dollars and change will make a difference in the lives of some of the 15,000 men, women and children who were without a home last year.

As we get closer to the event, we’ll have more details to share.
